Smog Showdown March 12, 2008: EPA to Announce Final Revisions to the Smog Standards

It’s coming down to the wire. What’s literally at stake is the quality of the air we breathe.

The U.S. EPA is on the verge of deciding if national health standards for smog should be made tougher.

EPA’s independent science advisers think so — unanimously. So do EPA’s career experts. And so do lung doctors and many other medical groups. That’s because current standards are outdated — not good enough to protect against asthma attacks, emergency room visits, and premature death.

But big polluters are putting on a smog squeeze. They want the White House to keep the existing standards.

EPA must issue final revisions to the smog standards by March 12, 2008.

The moment of truth is at hand: what will EPA do? The fact sheets below provide background on the pending decision.
