EPA Staff Scientists Recommend Tougher Ozone Standards

A final EPA Staff Paper on the review of the National Ambient Air Quality Standards (NAAQS) for ozone air pollution concludes that the current standard is not protective of public health and must be strengthened.

EPA staff scientists recommended that the current standard be lowered from 0.085 ppm, 8-hour average, to somewhere between 0.060 and 0.080 ppm, 8-hour average.

In addition, the document recommends that the “rounding loophole” be eliminated.

The Clean Air Scientific Advisory Committee will meet in a public teleconference on March 5, 2007 to review the final Staff Paper.

EPA is slated to propose revisions to the ozone air quality standards by June 20, 2007 and to finalize a rule by March 12, 2008.
