Children’s Health Committee Supports Tougher PM Standards, 3-3-06
The Children’s Health Protection Advisory Committee has urged EPA to set the final National Ambient Air Quality Standards for fine and coarse particulate matter at lower levels than proposed.
The 26-member advisory committee to the EPA specifically pointed out that neither the proposed annual average PM2.5 standard, nor the proposed 24-hour PM2.5 standard are low enough to provide the required adequate margin of safety to protect infants and children.
“We are especially concerned that it appears the health of children was neither adequately nor explicitly considered in determining the proposed standards, in particular with respect to the margin of safety considerations,” stated the letter.
