Rep. Dingell Questions EPA Political Review of NAAQS Process, Jan. 12, 2006

On January 12, 2006, Congressman John Dingell wrote to EPA Administrator Steve Johnson questioning EPA’s recently announced political review of the air quality standard-setting process.

EPA Deputy Administrator Marcus Peacock had issued a directive calling for a “top to bottom” review of the process for setting air quality standards. Some observers noted that the directive seemed intended to marginalize the roles of EPA staff scientists and the agency’s outside science advisory committee, following EPA’s unprecedented rejection of those advisors’ recommendations for the proposed PM2.5 standards.
