California Groups Support State Ozone Standards
Health and environmental groups in California have signalled their strong suppport for proposed revisions to California’s ambient air quality standards for ozone.
In a September 1, 2004 letter to the California Air Resources Board (CARB), the groups strongly supported establishment of a new 8-hour average ozone standard of 0.070 ppm, not to be exceeded, and retention of the current 1-hour average standard of 0.09 ppm, not to be exceeded.
The letter cited CARB estimates showing that the proposed standards would avert 3.3 million school absence days annually, and would prevent 640 premature deaths, 3,800 hospitalizations for respiratory disease, 130 emergency room visits for children, and 2.6 million restricted activity days for adults each year.
Groups signing the letter included the American Lung Association of California, the California Thoracic Society, Environment California, the Steven and Michele Kirsch Foundation, National Parks and Conservation Association, Merced/Mariposa County Asthma Coalition, Environmental Defense, the Medical Alliance for Healthy Air, Community Medical Centers in Fresno, the Fresno Metro Ministry, and Sierra Club California.
