Health Professionals for Clean Air Statement July 20, 2004

Dr. Bonnie New, Health Professionals for Clean Air, a coalition of 63 doctors, nurses, researchers and other Texas health professionals, presented a statement at he July 20-21, 2004 Clean Air Scientific Advisory Committee (CASAC) meeting to review the sixth draft Criteria Document on Particulate Matter.

“It is important to remember that the impacts of air pollution extend beyond the faceless data that is summarized in the chapters of the Criteria Document, stated Dr. New.

“While research can measure changes in mortality and morbidity, the effects of air pollution reach far deeper into people’s lives than health studies can show. Air pollution not only impairs people’s health, it saps limited family incomes to pay for medical expenses and in many other ways, big and small, damages the quality of life of affected individuals and their families,” she stated.
