Appalachian Mountain Club Addresses Secondary Standards, 11-4-03

Appalachian Mountain Club (AMC) Staff Scientist Georgia Murray filed written comments on EPA’s draft Staff Paper that emphasize the need for strong secondary standards to protect against the adverse environmental impacts of fine particles, including visibility impairment and acid deposition.

“AMC believes that just as the primary standard is set to levels that protect the most vulnerable in the human population that the secondary standard should protect the most sensitive natural resources,” state the comments. “We believe the evidence for a strong secondary NAAQS to prtoect ecological attributes is demonstrated in the Staff Paper through its discussion of the cumulative and pervasive impacts of acid aerosols in the Eastern U.S. and specifically in mountain ecosystems.”
