State and National Groups Urge Enactment of California Standards, June 2002

California and national health and environmental organizations have weighed in with the California Air Resources Board to urge adoption of the proposed ambient air quality standards for PM10 and PM2.5, and subsequent review of the 24-hour PM2.5 standard.

“The proposed new standards are necessary to protect all communities in California from lung illnesses and premature death, but are especially important to protect children. The developing lungs and immune systems in children are especially vulnerable to air pollution hazards. Few decisions that you make are likely to have a greater impact on the health and longevity of California communities and children,” wrote a coalition of a dozen California health and environmental organizations in a June 19, 2002 letter to Alan C. Lloyd, Ph.D., Chair of the California Air Resources Board, on the proposal to establlish state standards for fine particulate matter.

National organizations led by the America Lung Association® signed on a similar letter to the Air Resources Board.

Copies of the letters are attached.
