Fact Sheet on NMMAPS Reanalysis, June 6, 2002
Refined analysis of the National Morbidity, Mortality and Air Pollution Study (NMMAPS) changes the quantitative estimates of the study, but the major conclusions remain the same.
Three important conslusions of the study remain unchanged by the re-analysis.
– there is strong evidence of an association between acute exposure to particulate air pollution and daily mortality;
– this association is strongest for respiratory and cardiovascular causes of disease; and
– this association cannot be attributed to other air pollutants nor to weather.
The American Lung Association® has prepared a fact sheet entitled “Particulate Air Pollution and Health: The Facts” which provides information on the implications of the new findings. A copy is attached.
