PM Risk Assessment Methodology Under Review, January 2002

EPA has published a draft risk assessment methodology for public comment.

The draft document, entitled “Proposed Methodology for Particulate Matter Risk Analyses for Selected Urban Areas,” was prepared by Abt Associates for EPA. A copy is attached.

The risk assessment proposed to be underken by EPA will be an important component of the Staff Paper to be developed by EPA as part of the review of the National Ambient Air Quality Standards (NAAQS) for particulate matter. The risk assessment will provide quantitiative indications of the relative benefits of alternative regulatory options.

Comments were due by February 27, 2002.

Comments prepared by the American Lung Association® on the draft document are available at: American Lung Association® comments on risk assessment methodology.

The Clean Air Scientific Adivsory Committee (CASAC) held a public teleconference meeting on February 27, 2002 to review the draft methodology.

CASAC will prepare a report to EPA on the review of the document.
