Lung Association Urges EPA to Accelerate Review of the Ozone NAAQS, February 15, 2002
The American Lung Association® has filed comments with EPA urging the Agency to accelerate its review of the ozone NAAQS. The comments were filed on EPA’s proposed Work Plan for revising the ozone standard.
Under the Clean Air Act, EPA is supposed to complete a review of the NAAQS every five years, to take into account advances in scientific understanding of the health effects of air pollutants.
Because the ozone NAAQS were last revised on July 18, 1997, the five-year deadline for completion of the review expires July 18, 2002. Yet EPA has proposed a schedule for preparation of a draft criteria document that extends well beyond this deadline.
In the comments, the American Lung Association® urges EPA “to promptly adopt a schedule for expeditious completion of the ozone NAAQS review.”
A copy of the Lung Association comments and EPA’s proposed Work Plan are attached.
