California Cites Need for Hourly Standard

The California Air Resources Board (CARB) is calling for EPA to consider a one-hour standard for PM, and to establish continuous monitoring requirements to enforce it.

“This type of short-term standard would address acute PM health effects associated with high PM episodes, like exposures to smoke from forest fires or very high levels of PM from high wind events which are common in the western United States. We would also like to see OAQPS move toward identification of acceptable continuous monitoring methods …,” state written comments submitted by Michael P. Kenny, CARB
Executive Officer.

The July 19, 2001 comments are attached.
