Children’s Health Concerns Slighted in Draft Staff Paper, September 28, 2001
Children are especially susceptible to air pollution. The airways of young children are smaller than those of adults, explain comments filed by the Children’s Environmental Health Network (CEHN) on EPA’s draft PM Staff Paper.
Children have increased oxygen needs compared to adults, they breathe more rapidly and inhale more pollutants per pound of body weight than adults, and they often spend more time engaged in vigorous outdoor activities than adults
The Staff Paper does not follow EPA and Executive Order policies to explicitly consider and protect children. CEHN believes that such a review would assist EPA in adequately addressing pediatric environmental health concerns and strengthening the Staff Paper and resulting recommendations.
