Lung Association Seeks Improvements in EPA’s CD & Staff Paper on PM, July 23, 2001

The American Lung Association® believes new scientific information supports reaffirming the annual average fine particle standard, strengthening the 24-hour fine particle standard, and setting meaningful new standards for coarse particles, according to testimony presented before the Clean Air Scientific Advisory Committee (CASAC) meeting on July 23, 2001.

The testimony focuses on the 24-hour PM2.5 standard because that is the area most in need of review by EPA. The level and form of the standard set by EPA in 1997 was not sufficient to protect the health of the public, particularly the health of sensitive subpopulations.

The testimony presented by Deborah Shprentz, Consultant to the Lung Association, disucsses the 24-hour standard in terms of the key issues that were before CASAC at the July 23, 2001 meeting:

– the need to update and broaden the analysis of fine particle monitoring information;

– the need to broaden the proposed risk analysis; and

– the need to include more interpretation of key studies in the CD and Staff Paper.
