EPA To Issue Draft Risk Assessment Methodology 2/02
EPA is planning to include a limited risk analysis in the next version of its Staff Paper for PM. A carefully prepared risk analysis is an important analytical input to compare the potential public health impacts of alternative regulatory proposals.
Public health advocates have raised concerns that EPA is artificially constraining its options by proposing to restrict the breadth and scope of the risk analysis.
For instance, EPA proposed to examine health impacts in just two cities, but health advocates would prefer a national analysis of mortality impacts.
These comments were raised on a scoping document released in July 2001 as part of the Staff Paper.
The scoping document on the risk assessment is available at: http://www.epa.gov/ttn/oarpg/t1/reports/scopingplan.pdf
After the July 21, 2001 CASAC meeting, EPA announced that it would be preparing a more detailed proposed risk analysis methodology. That document will likely be released for public comment in February 2002.
